A Bollywood superstar Ms- Ranbir Kapoor has become the latest celebrity to join the Nissan Motor car endorsement bandwagon. He has been roped in as the brand ambassador of Nissan Motor India Private Ltd (NMIPL).

According to a release, the three-year contract entails Mr. Kapoor to endorse the products and services of Nissan in India through promotion, advertising and marketing. AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institute of Managements (IIMS) would review the contract of US firm hints Prometric, after large scale glitches in the first computer-based Common Admission Test (CAT) across the country. This year Common Admission Test to the IIMs today dangled the offer of a possible retest for candidates who had good performance was affected by technical glitches that despoil in India. IIMS service provider, US-based Prometric, did not explain on what basis it would determine which candidates were adversely affected by the glitches - attributed to malware by the IIMs and the firm. The software used for the test by Prometric allows it to measure the exact time taken by each candidate to answer a particular question, to complete a particular section of the test and to complete the entire test. The IIMs have also decided to give an extra opportunity to students who could not take the test due to genuine reasons even after extending the test window period by a day on December 8, Director Samir K Barua said. Five girl students were killed and at least 34 other students were injured Thursday morning in a stampede in a school here after rumours that electric current had leaked into waterlogged classrooms, police said. Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal described the tragedy as a shame.
A stampede at the Government Senior Secondary School at Khajuri Khas in the trans-Yamuna area on Thursday morning left five girls dead and 35 students injured. Six of the victims are in the Intensive Care Unit of the Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital in a critical condition. The Delhi government has ordered an inquiry by the area Deputy Commissioner and announced an ex gratia of Rs.1 lakh to the families of each of the deceased and Rs.50,000 to each injured. The incident took place in the Government Senior Secondary School (Class 6-12) in Khajoori Khas in northeast Delhi around 9 a.m. The victims were mostly from Classes 7-10, who had come to the school in pouring rain for their half-yearly examinations. There was a lot of confusion about the seating arrangement because of rain. Then there was an announcement asking the boys to go to the first floor,” said a Class X girl student.
She said a large number of girls were in the corridor and the classrooms on the first floor. When the boys reached there, some of them allegedly started misbehaving with the girls. This apparently triggered panic and the girls ran towards a narrow staircase, resulting in the stampede.
A Class X student, Jyoti, said some of the injured girls fell unconscious.
While 33 of those injured were rushed to the GTB Hospital in ambulances and police vans, the others were taken to another nearby hospital. Doctors at the GTB Hospital tried to revive five of the victims, but finally declared them brought dead. They were identified as Lalita, Mumtaz, Ayesha, Monika and Afroz. Most of the deaths were due to head injuries. As news about the stampede spread, local residents gathered outside the school in large numbers demanding action against the administration. They damaged a chartered bus and blocked traffic for some time. Girl students alleged that eve-teasing by outsiders was common in the school, which conducted separate classes for girls and boys. The police later barricaded the lane leading up to the school.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit visited the injured at the GTB Hospital in the afternoon. She said an inquiry had been ordered and the guilty would be punished.
The police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence and are waiting to record the statements of those injured. I have the identity card of my daughter who studies in this school but the police are not letting me in. What should I do, I have not got any news about her,' said a grieving father, standing outside the hospital.

India’s first moon mission Chandrayaan-I, came to an abrupt end early on Saturday and it was slated to be a two year mission , Isro chairman Madhavan Nair said that nearly 95% of Chandrayaan ‘s scientific goals had already been accomplished in less than a year. ISRO's Deep Space Network near Bangalore received the data from the spacecraft up to 0025 hours after which it lost contact with earth.
Having completed bulk of the scientific mission ,Isro chief spokesperson S Satish said that even if Chandrayaan-I, had remained in orbit for another year, nothing much would have been gained. In the hostile lunar environment, It is impossible for a spacecraft to survive for long periods, “He said.
The spacecraft was launched in the moon's orbit from ISRO's Satish Dhawan Space Centre Sriharikota on October 22, 2008. We have lost contact with the spacecraft and the mission is over," Project Director of the Chandrayaan-1 mission M Annadurai said. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) however claimed that the moon mission had achieved most of its objectives. Though there was no official word on the cause of the loss of contact, space experts, who declined to be identified, said it could be due to a power problem in the spacecraft being hit by a some space object. Chandrayaan-1 has done its job technically about 100%. Scientifically, it has done almost 90-95% of its job, "Mr Annadurai added.

An India in which the creativity and enterprise of every citizen can find its full and free expression.
We need to do much more to generate and distribute more power, more efficiently. Everyone should get good quality power at affordable prices. I appeal to state governments to take this matter seriously as a weak power situation can become a handicap in industrialization and job-creation.

This vision of India is our proud inheritance from our national movement. We are committed to fully realizing it. We have worked hard to translate this vision into reality, through legislative action, new programmes and new policies. Towards this end we have vastly increased fiscal support to social and human development.

Today, when I look back, I can say with some satisfaction that we are undoubtedly moving forward in the right direction. We have been slow in taking some steps; we have dithered at times, and stumbled some times. We have had success on some fronts, and setbacks on some others.

India wants to have good relations with all the countries of the world. Big and small. Countries of the East and the West, the North and the South. Today, we enjoy good relations with all major powers and all developing countries. We have emerged as a bridge between the many extremes of the world. Our composite culture is living proof of the possibility of a confluence of civilizations. India will always be a nation bridging the many global divides.

I also want our young people to actively associate themselves with a “National Campaign for Cleanliness” in our neighbourhoods, in public places and markets, in villages and slums. Let us all take that one extra step to ensure that we live in clean and healthy surroundings. Each one of us can make a difference by practicing what we preach. As Gandhiji used to say, we must be the change we want to see.

India wants to live in a neighbourhood of peace and prosperity. I assure all our neighbours that we in India want peace and the best of relations with all of them. I sincerely believe that in the prosperity and well-being of our neighbours lies the key to our own security and progress.
We are a young nation. More importantly, we are a nation of young people. Once unleashed, the energy of our youth will drive India onto a new growth path. I assure you that for each one of you, and for our country, the best is yet to come.

We must have faith in our strength and confidence in our capabilities. Each of us have our individual identities. However, every citizen must recognize that we are Indians first and last. We fritter away our time on petty issues and pointless personal differences. I urge all political parties, all political and social leaders to resist the temptation to divide people along narrow, sectarian lines. Our strength is in our unity, despite our diversity. It is that unity which gave us our Independence. It is that unity that gives us our strength as a nation.

This was the dream of our founding fathers. This was the vision of our Constitution. We should not move away from this vision, and must face the future with courage. However, as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said from these ramparts nearly sixty years ago, “laws and constitutions do not by themselves make a country great. It is the enthusiasm, energy and constant effort of a people that make it a great nation.”

Let us all come together and work resolutely for the welfare of our people and for the development of our nation.

* Avoid being face-to-face with the sick person.
* When holding small children who are sick, place their chin on your shoulder so that they will not cough in your face.
* Clean your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand rub after you touch the sick person or handle used tissues, or laundry.
* Talk to your Doctor about taking antiviral medication to prevent the caregiver from getting the flu.
* Monitor yourself and household members for flu symptoms and the local H1N1 Command Center if the symptoms occur.
Care for other members at home:
• The sick person should not have visitors other than caregivers. A phone call is safer than a visit.
• If possible, have only one adult in the home take care of the sick person.
• Avoid having pregnant women care for the sick person. (Pregnant women are at increased risk of influenza-related complications and immunity can be suppressed during pregnancy).
• All persons in the household should clean their hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub frequently, including after every contact with the sick person or the personâ€™s room or bathroom.

From inside a retail store. It’s past lunchtime and Mahavir Tyagi appears to be taking an afternoon siesta in his well-stocked seed and fertilizer shop. Not that this 30-something retailer and farmer needs any rest. It’s just that he hardly has any work this year.
‘‘Around this time in past years, I would be up to my neck in work, supplying inputs to farmers who come from surrounding villages. My daily sales would be in the range of Rs 70,000-80,000. This year, on lucky days, sales touch Rs 20,000,’’ says Tyagi.

‘‘Why would farmers need fertilizers when their crops aren’t getting water?’’ he asks rhetorically.
The shopkeeper himself owns 22 acres of land in this Tyagi-dominated village next to the Aravalis. Six of the 18 acres of paddy he had sown has been lost. ‘‘In the 10 years I’ve been farming, I’ve never seen such a dry spell. Around 60% of the paddy village farmers had sown is gone. Even the rest is in danger of withering if it doesn’t rain soon,’’ he says.

The next 8-10 days, Tyagi says, will be crucial. ‘‘The paddy crop is almost gone. If rains don’t come very soon, even the fodder crop would be destroyed. That will badly hit the health of cattle, milk prices and farmer’s livelihoods. Already, fodder rates are as high as Rs 5/kg. If it gets any worse, farmers wouldn’t be able to feed their livestock.’’

The village is fed by a canal that brings Yamuna water to the fields. Though the canal currently has enough flow, now that Uttarakhand has had some rains, it can water less than 50% of the village farms. The rest have to rely on underground water, which hardly suffices for a paddy crop when the ground is bone dry.
Extrapolate Karnera’s woes and you get a picture of the crisis facing most of north India. As of August 5, the region had a 40% rainfall deficit. In many districts, though, the shortfall ranged from 60% to 80%. With the El Nino phenomenon — that depresses the monsoon in India — likely to take effect by early September, the outlook for the next few weeks appears bleak as well.

PM tells Azad: Form doctors' panel on swine flu

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday told health minister Ghulam Nabi Azad to form a team of doctors to provide "correct
information" to the people regarding swine flu that has claimed four lives in India.

"The prime minister has asked the health minister to set up a panel of doctors that will give correct information to the public on swine flu," an official in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

Manmohan Singh said the panel should also provide proper information to the media so that there are no misconceptions.

The official said the minister telephoned the prime minister Sunday morning to update him about the steps being taken to tackle the virus.

"The health minister assured the prime minister that there is sufficient stock of Tamiflu and people detected with the virus have been quarantined," the official said.

"The prime minister has also asked the health minister that he should be informed immediately if there is any change in the situation," he said.

According to the official, the prime minister had discussed with Azad the swine flu situation at Friday's cabinet meeting.

The prime minister had earlier instructed that there be no shortage of Tamiflu.

Azad has also been told to ensure that the union health secretary meets all state health secretaries and keep the cabinet secretary updated.

A school teacher from a village near Pune and a non-resident Indian (NRI) man who had flown from the US to Ahmedabad died of swine flu Sunday.

These follow the deaths of a woman in Mumbai Saturday and of a 14-year-old girl in Pune on Aug 3.

India has reported over 780 cases, of which nearly 500 patients have been cured. The most badly hit states are Delhi and Maharashtra. .
